The US national moratorium on evictions ended Aug. 26. In June, it was stated that the Department of Veterans Affairs "is deeply concerned about possible dramatic increases in homelessness when eviction moratoria are lifted," Keith Harris, national director of clinical operations for the VA's Homeless Programs Office, said at a House Veterans Affairs Committee hearing.
At Dixon Center for Military and Veteran Services, we understand that having access to a stable housing environment is an essential part of the overall wellness for our veterans and their families. Dixon Center is a resource for individuals and organizations interested in the long-term wellbeing of our veterans and their families. We are providing influence, ideas and actions to employers, educators, direct service providers and philanthropists, who, with our ongoing support, develop, fund, and operate life changing programs.
To this end, Dixon Center is educating civic, public, and private organizations in order to reduce the negative impacts of unfair housing practices on veterans. We are assisting organizations with strategies, training, outreach and awareness, and solutions to help them direct veterans and their families to workable solutions when challenged by limited access to affordable housing and unfair housing practices.
We are also assisting organizations with resources for furniture and other items that turn a house into a home for at-risk and low-income veterans and their families.
